Two Geographies, One Breath
“The rainforest holds one note for an hour; the meadow leaves silence between songs. The daegeum breathes between them.”
The Project
An album and performance project in which the daegeum — the Korean bamboo flute — breathes within soundscapes recorded in the rainforests of Borneo and along the riversides of Bath, England.
The Bornean forest is saturated with sound: an insect holds a single pitch for the better part of an hour; cicadas cry in sliding tones. The meadows of Bath are its opposite — long silences between birdsong, a river running low and steady. This project collects the sounds of both places and connects their density and emptiness through the breath of a bamboo flute.
The insect’s sustained tone becomes a cheong — the reference pitch of Korean traditional music; the cicadas’ glissandi converse with sigimsae ornaments; the slow swelling of the river moves at the pace of a court-music phrase. The natural world here is not a backdrop but a playing partner.

Two Forms, Two Senses of Time
A Meditative Album
Nearly untouched soundscapes with live daegeum — music for staying inside a place. Minimal processing: choosing, layering, and breath.
A Thirty-Minute Journey
A single crossing from an English riverside into the Bornean forest, with sound transformed live on stage — ending with the bamboo flute alone.
First sound excerpts and field notes from Borneo and Bath are on their way — recorded at dawn by the river, and in the forest at night.
