<image:title>About - Hyelim Kim — Daegeum Soloist · Composer · Ethnomusicologist</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr Hyelim Kim is a London-based daegeum (대금, Korean bamboo flute) soloist, composer, vocalist, and ethnomusicologist who performs internationally — presenting gugak (Korean traditional music) in concert halls, festivals, and cultural institutions across Europe, Asia, and Australia. Her work positions Korean traditional music as a living, evolving force within contemporary global culture. Performance & Recognition A daegeum virtuoso, Kim was selected as an 'emerging artist' by the Korean Arts Council and as the Kumho Young Artist. She has performed a live session with Nils Frahm on BBC Radio 3's Late Junction, premiered a daegeumconcertino as soloist with the Orchestre de chambre de Paris, and is a regular member of the Third Orchestra (Barbican Centre). Her competition accolades include the Gold Medal at the Korean National Taegŭm Competition and 1st Prize at the Korean National Chongro Music Competition. Kim has appeared at festivals worldwide, including the London Jazz Festival, Holland Festival, Helsinki Festival, Wiener Festwochen, AKBANK Jazz Festival (Istanbul), and the Oranjewoud Festival (Netherlands). She has performed in the United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Finland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Luxembourg, Denmark, Turkey, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Australia, and South Korea. In 2023, Kim received the prestigious Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Composers, recognising her distinctive contribution to new music in the UK. Her monograph Tradition and Creativity in Korean Taegŭm Flute Performancewas published by Routledge in 2021. Direction & Research Kim is the founder and director of Korean Music UK (since 2013), a London-based network presenting Korean traditional music and dance across the UK and Europe through concerts, festivals, school workshops, and Pungryu gatherings. Under its umbrella, she leads two ensembles: the Shilla Ensemble, dedicated to Korean traditional music and dance, and the Celadon Club, a cross-Asian ensemble bringing together musicians from Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Thai traditions. She is a Visiting Researcher at Bath Spa University, where her research explores intercultural and decolonial approaches to creative practice. Recent Commissions & Collaborations Recent commissions include a sound work for the Sydney Opera House and a British Council-funded soundscape project exploring shared water heritage between the UK and Malaysia, culminating in Echoes of Water — a collaboration with Malaysian composer Yii Kah Hoe. In 2025, Kim completed a Korea Arts Council overseas residency at Studio 88 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, recording a three-track album with Thai musicians. Interdisciplinary Practice Kim's interdisciplinary practice extends to film: her PRS Foundation-funded Dansang short films won the Best Music Award at the Experimental, Dance & Music Film Festival (Los Angeles, 2021), and her Korean Music with Naturevideo series was supported by the Korean Ministry of Culture. Based in London, Kim continues to bridge traditional Korean artistry with contemporary and cross-cultural expression — through performance, composition, research, and education.</image:caption>

<image:title>Research - Tradition and Creativity in Korean Taegŭm Flute Performance (2021, Routledge)</image:title>
<image:caption>describes the taegŭm as a representation of Korean culture in the contemporary world. Through the development and performance of creative works, this horizontal bamboo flute reflects both tradition and contemporary creativity. The first part of the book outlines the historical background of the taegŭm. The author illuminates the potential future of the Korean flute in a globalised world through the analyses of three musical works for taegŭm. The second part of the book draws on approaches of Practice Research within ethnomusicology and sociology to examine the ways in which the taegŭm tradition interacts with, and responds to, different genres in performance. Documenting collaborative encounters with musicians from three musical cultures: jazz, Western art and electroacoustic music, the result is an innovative exploration of the musical and social relationships between composers, performers and audiences in intercultural performances, contrasting traditional uses of the taegŭm with perspectives on its use today.</image:caption>
